Website: Career Center

The Career Center emphasizes engaging students in career development and self-assessment throughout their college experience. Seton Hall students benefit from a comprehensive career development plan that includes assessments, advising, internships, mentoring, and networking and recruitment opportunities. Career Center professionals offer personalized guidance to help students prepare for and secure internships and professional employment after graduation.

Career-based Experiential Learning

Career-Based Experiential Learning at Seton Hall University offers out-of-the-classroom education through pre-professional experiences. These programs include internships, fieldwork, practica, clinical placements, and student teaching assignments.

The Career Center supports students in preparing for these opportunities and manages the University Internship Program for the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Human Development, Culture, and Media, and the Stillman School of Business.

Internships

Seton Hall’s Internship Program integrates meaningful work experience with intentional learning and academic goals. All internships are approved and monitored. Career Center professionals collaborate with employers to ensure students gain valuable experience and professional development.

Internships help students clarify career goals, strengthen professional skills, build confidence, and explore work values. Students typically work between 15–40 hours per week and may earn compensation to offset educational expenses. Internships can be paid or unpaid, and credit-bearing or non-credit-bearing. Many graduating students who complete internships report receiving full-time job offers from their host employers.

Students seeking academic credit for their internships must obtain approval from a designated internship faculty advisor. These faculty members work closely with the Career Center to help students define learning objectives and evaluate the academic component of the experience. Reflection on what was learned is typically required, and some academic departments may have additional requirements for credit-bearing internships.

Students not pursuing academic credit will work directly with a Career Center adviser to guide their experience. All students interested in internships are encouraged to schedule an appointment with a career adviser at the Career Center.

Career Counseling and Assessment

National trends show that 70 to 80 percent of college students change their academic major at least once. Career assessments such as the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and other online tools help students explore how their interests, personality, values, and motivations influence academic and career decisions.

The Career Center also offers CliftonStrengths to support personal growth and team development.

Snack and Learn Career Workshops

Each year, more than 2,000 students and alumni participate in these interactive workshops, which align with NACE’s career readiness competencies. The Career Center has reimagined its traditional 60-minute sessions into 20-minute Snack and Learns followed by a 10-minute Q&A, creating an engaging 30-minute experience designed to build essential career skills.

Workshop topics include mastering professional communication, building a personal brand, navigating workplace culture, enhancing critical thinking through real-world problem solving, growing a digital presence through LinkedIn, and developing leadership through everyday actions. Whether preparing for internships, full-time roles, or graduate school, students gain practical tools to succeed in today’s competitive job market.

Pirate’s Closet

To support students in presenting themselves professionally, the Career Center offers access to the Pirate’s Closet—a resource that provides free professional attire for interviews, career fairs, and networking events. Students can browse and select gently used clothing suitable for a variety of professional settings, helping to remove barriers to career readiness.

Employer/Alumni Networking Events

The Career Center maintains strong partnerships with employer organizations that actively recruit Seton Hall students and alumni. Each year, hundreds of companies participate in on-campus networking events and recruit for internships and full-time professional opportunities. Employers and alumni also serve as career mentors and engage in networking events and on-campus interviews throughout the year to connect with emerging talent and support students' professional development.

Career events are tailored to a variety of industries, providing students with targeted opportunities to explore career paths, engage with professionals, and expand their networks. Signature events include:

  • Law School Confidential – Provides students with insight into diverse legal career paths and guidance on preparing for success in the legal field.

  • Health Expo – A networking event for students interested in careers in the healthcare industry.

  • CommConnect 2024 – A dynamic event that fosters connections between professionals and students in the field of communication.

In addition to these signature programs, the Career Center hosts one large, university-wide career fair each fall, three industry-specific fairs in the spring semester, and numerous other career events throughout the year—offering students various opportunities to connect with employers across industries. Seton Hall also participates in the annual Big East Sports and Entertainment Networking Night in New York City.

To further enhance career exploration, the Career Center organizes employer site visits, giving students the chance to gain firsthand exposure to a range of industries and build meaningful professional connections.
