The M.A.E. program in Higher Education prepare students for careers working in colleges and universities. Students in the M.A.E. program choose a concentration, including:
- College Student Personnel Affairs - ideal for those pursuing careers in student services, residential life, orientation, academic advising, or diversity and inclusion, this concentration focuses on student development theory, higher education policy, and the foundations of student affairs leadership.
- General Administration - geared toward future leaders in university operations, this track prepares students for roles in enrollment management, institutional research, athletics administration, alumni relations, fundraising, and financial or accreditation management. Courses explore legal and financial issues, governance, and strategic planning in higher education.
Students in either concentration complete a three-credit internship involving 150–180 hours of hands-on experience in a higher education setting. Internships provide real-world exposure to student affairs or administrative functions and include portfolio development, faculty advisement, and goal-setting assignments tailored to each student’s professional interests.
Admissions Details

Application Requirements
To be considered for admission, applicants are required to submit the following materials:
- Online application and application fee
- Resume/Curriculum vitae
- Personal statement (up to 550 words, about two pages)
- Official transcript(s) from all institutions attended, including an earned Master's-level degree (cumulative GPA of at least 3.0)
- Letters of recommendation (2) from academic and/or professional references
International applicants are welcome. Please review the College's frequently asked admissions questions for supplemental requirements.
Application and Enrollment Dates
The program operates on a rolling admissions schedule where students may begin their studies in either the Fall or Spring semester. Priority application review for each admissions term include:
- Fall entry - March 15
- Spring entry - October 15
Additional applications are considered following the priority review on a space-available basis.
Curriculum Requirements
Students must complete a minimum of 30-credit hours, as listed below. Credits earned from other institutions or other programs at Seton Hall cannot be transferred nor applied to the 30 credit requirement.

Internship
The internship component prepares graduate students to manage various roles in student affairs administration and other functional areas at the postsecondary level through the opportunity to gain practical experience in higher education. This three-credit course includes internship participation, faculty advisement, and portfolio development. Additionally, preparation is required before course registration to ensure internship approval. The student is responsible for researching and securing the semester-long internship. Each student is required to complete approximately 150-180 hours of on-site internship work (10-12 hours/ per week). Due to the complexities within the higher education environment, each student is required to develop goals and objectives specific to his/her internship experience and initial expectations. These goals and objectives will serve as the structure for internship responsibility growth and the starting point for various writing assignments required throughout the course.

This Planner tab offers a sample semester-by-semester model schedule which accounts for historical course availability. For timely completion of the program, students must routinely meet with their assigned academic advisor to carefully plan their schedule based on available courses.
