The Classical Studies Program offers a variety of courses for students interested in a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Classical Studies, as well as minors in Greek, Latin, Classical Languages, and Classical Culture. Students gain an awareness and appreciation of the influence the Classical World has had throughout history by studying the historical, literary, linguistic and religious elements of Greece and Rome. Courses in the program are designed not only for Classical Studies majors but also for majors in English, history, political science and philosophy, as well as for any students seeking a broader background in the most fundamental and influential writings in Western literature. Courses in Latin and Greek give students a new understanding of the English and European languages and offer direct access to the original texts of ancient poetry, drama, philosophy, history, the New Testament and the writings of the Christian tradition from its origins until modern times. Classical culture courses in English translation offer a broad survey of these literary masterpieces, emphasizing their significance for the modern world as well as for their original cultural context.
The Classical Studies major offers two tracks:
Eta Sigma Phi, the National Classics Honor Society Seton Hall Chapter: Theta Delta
Students who have completed at least one class in the Latin or Greek language and earned a grade of B or higher are encouraged to apply for membership in Eta Sigma Phi. This organization seeks to stimulate interest in classical study, and in the history, art, and literature of ancient Greece and Rome. Eta Sigma Phi holds its annual induction ceremony at the end of the Spring semester. shu.edu/languages-literatures-cultures/eta-sigma-phi
Seton Hall “Mythos”
Mythos is an organization where students can learn and talk about mythology. Bi-weekly meetings and related events include student presentations and trivia as well as baked goods and snacks. Each year follows a theme that helps guide meeting discussions and activities.
Study Abroad Opportunity
Every Spring, Classical Studies offers a study abroad course, giving students the opportunity to visit ancient Greek, Roman, and Christian sites in places such as Rome, Pompeii, Florence, Athens, Delphi, Tarragona, Nice, and Marseilles.
