French is a global language, spoken in Europe, Canada, Africa, Asia, South America, and Oceania by more than 300 million individuals. The minor in French enables students to leverage their language learning and cultural competency in order to prepare for professional success and global citizenship. The career fields for students of French are many and varied; they include but are not limited to translation and interpretation, diplomacy, journalism and foreign correspondence, foreign service, nonprofit, international business, law, marketing, nonprofit, teaching and training, public policy and strategy, and hospitality.

Students are required to take an online placement test through the Global Learning Center in order to register for classes in any language(s) that they have previously studied.

18 credits above the Elementary level are required to complete a minor.  The sequence of courses for a minor is as follows:

Students may choose from courses in conversation, film, special topics, civilization, international relations, diplomacy or literature.

Students beginning their minor at a level higher than Intermediate or Advanced may satisfy the minor requirements with 18 credits in language, culture, or literature electives above the Advanced level.
