Spanish for Healthcare Certificate (Intermediate)

This certificate prepares students for the workforce by integrating content knowledge in the health professions and language training in Spanish. It is suitable for students in Nursing, Pre-Med, Interprofessional Health Sciences, Social Work, and many other majors.

Notes:

1. SPAN 2005 and 2006 are required courses. In order to take these courses, students must either:
   1. Complete SPAN 1002 as a pre-requisite; OR
   2. Receive equivalent placement into SPAN 2001 (=2005) or 2002 (=2006).
2. The remaining coursework consists of 12 credits of any of the following:*
   1. Other Spanish courses at the 3000 and 4000 levels;
   2.  A for-credit internship (in addition to the experiential requirement mentioned above) where at least 10 hours are in the target language;
   3. Eligible "cognate" courses from other units.
   ​​* At least two different programs (course prefixes) must be represented in these 12 credits.
3. In order for an experiential learning opportunity to qualify for the certificate, the student must:
   1. With the endorsement of a Seton Hall Faculty member, submit a proposal for approval to the program director;
   2. Complete a minimum number of experiential contact hours in the target language. This minimum will vary by the type of placement, but is never less than 10 hours. At least 25% of the interactions during this time should be in the target language;
   3. Complete written, reflective work, to be reviewed and approved by Seton Hall faculty;
   4. Meet all other applicable university and college requirements for participation, including but not limited to requirements for for-credit internships and education abroad.
4. Certification via the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI)* at the level of Intermediate. The standard for proficiency testing is provided in North America by ACTFL, the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. Students who complete an OPI receive certification that can be shared with graduate schools, employers, etc.

* OPI testing may require the payment of a fee by the student.
