Social Work Policy and Justice Certificate

The Social Work Policy and Justice Certificate Program requires five courses or 15 credits and an applied experiential learning activity. The courses can be taken in any sequence with the exception that Introduction to Social Work must be taken first as it is a foundation course. Scheduling should be done in close consultation with full time faculty advisors.

80-Hour Experiential Learning Activity

This experiential learning activity is designed for students to apply what they have learned in the classroom to “real world” settings. Students are required to have experiences approved by the B.S.W. Program Director prior to beginning these hours. These learning activities can consist of internships, capstone projects, service-learning opportunities, practicums, and other “hands on” activities. These activities must be identified by the students – though they can use the Seton Hall Career Center or their respective academic major faculty to assist as needed. Experiential learning activities can be paid or unpaid. They can also be for academic credit or consist of non- credit opportunities. The B.S.W. Director and Field Director will provide assistance with locating appropriate internships or conceptualizing projects as needed. Social work majors are required to take SOWK 1111 Introduction to Social Work and SOWK 3301 Social Policy Analysis for the major so you can use these credits for the major and the Social Work Policy and Justice Certificate, but the nine additional credits (3 courses) must be for social work courses which are not counted as credits for the major. The experiential learning activity can be part of a social work field practicum for the social work major or any other credit/non-credit approved activity for another major/minor, as long as it meets the requirements for the Social Work Policy and Justice Certificate and is preapproved.

Social work minors are required to take SOWK 1111 Introduction to Social Work for the minor and any other 15 credits of social work courses (total 18 SOWK credits). All credits (with the exception of Introduction to Social Work) taken for the Social Work Policy and Justice Certificate (12 credits) must be for social work courses which are not counted as credits for the minor. The experiential learning activity can be part of major/minor requirements in another discipline, as long as it meets the requirements for the Social Work Policy and Justice Certificate and is preapproved.

Students must earn at least a 3.0 overall GPA in all courses taken for the Social Work Policy and Justice Certificate and satisfactory complete the experiential learning activity (internship, service project, etc.).

All certificate requirements must be completed within a five-year period.
