A collaboration within the College of Human Development, Culture, and Media between the Departments of Educational Studies and Communication, Media, and the Arts, the undergraduate Hip-Hop Studies 15-credit academic minor is available to interested students from across the University.
The academic minor offers students the competitive advantages of interdisciplinary and applied learning. Unlike traditional cultural studies programs, the Hip-Hop Studies minor invites students who are engaging in disciplines from across the University to explore hip-hop as a framework for creativity, critical consciousness, and civic engagement. Enrolled students will have the option to produce research, creative projects, or social impact initiatives, setting the program apart from purely theoretical offerings. Students in the academic minor benefit from a learning community that celebrates diversity and expands students’ global and cultural understanding.
Grounded in hip-hop’s global narrative of resilience and innovation, the academic minor aligns with the University's Mission and call to justice, compassion, and service for all. Similarly, the academic minor aligns with the University's commitment to providing holistic, career-focused learning by equipping students to critically engage with the world and lead in the expanding creative economy. Through the production of multimodal projects and the culminating Capstone Seminar, students connect their major discipline with real-world issues while exploring identity, culture, and purpose.
Curriculum Requirements
Students pursuing a minor in Hip-Hop Studies must complete 15 credits in the discipline as articulated below and in consultation with an academic advisor.
