The Sports Communications Certificate is a 12-credit, interdisciplinary undergraduate certificate offered by the Department of Communication, Media, and the Arts, in partnership with the College's Center for Sports Media. It provides students with a foundational understanding of communications principles in the rapidly changing sports industry. Students who earn the certificate will gain knowledge and applied experience to engage with the complex sports landscape and enhance sport experiences in areas such as communication strategy, reporting, content creation, public relations, journalism, and design.
The certificate may be pursued by students in any major across the University. Its flexible, interdisciplinary nature and practical focus will enhance a student’s degree and make them more marketable in the workforce. With the inclusion of foundational course work, it aims to serve as a feeder certificate for students to enroll in additional sports-related curriculum offered across the CHDCM.
Center for Sports Media
The Center for Sports Media within the College of Human Development, Culture, and Media redefines how students are trained in media, communications, sports business, engaging with the sports community, and producing groundbreaking content through University channels and partnerships with major media outlets.
Established in Fall 2021, the Center provides an interdisciplinary foundation for academic training and theory with practical experience pertinent to excellence in the Sports Media discipline.
The Center often hosts successful alumni like Bob Ley (ESPN), Bardia Shah-Rais (Fox Sports), John Fanta (NBC Sports) and Megan Olivi (Fox Sports, UFC) to provide students an “in” at top companies and offer mentorship for students. The Center’s Executive Director, B.J. Schecter, has spent more than three decades in the industry and is similarly connected to leading professionals.
In recent years, the Center launched the Pirates in the Field program, which offers students opportunities to cover some of the biggest sporting events each year including the Super Bowl, NCAA men’s and women’s basketball Final Four, Big East basketball tournament, and more. Exclusive partnerships with ESPN and NBC Sports offer students guaranteed internship spots, such as covering the 2026 Winter Olympics, and mentoring from network executives. No school has the breadth of opportunities as Seton Hall.
