Students of Spanish learn one of the world’s most spoken languages while also exploring the rich and varied cultures of the 21 Spanish-speaking countries. As a Spanish major, you will study for a liberal arts degree that hones your skills in the language, literatures, and cultures of the Hispanic world (including Spain and Latin America) – in ways that are directly applicable to any profession that requires strong analytical and writing skills.

The courses we offer provide instruction in the Spanish language (in a 3-year sequence from Elementary I to Advanced II), and cover all major periods, such as the Medieval, Renaissance and Romantic periods as well as major historical and artistic movements of the 20^th and 21^st centuries.

We offer a wide array of advanced courses in conversation, film, special topics, culture, business, international relations, diplomacy and literature including courses such as 19^th, 20^th Century and Contemporary Spanish and Latin American Literature, Mexico: Myths, Legends and Stories, Spanish Phonetics, Spanish for Healthcare, Spanish for Business and Diplomacy, Issue in Latin American Pop Culture and Representations of the Spanish Civil War in Literature and Film.

Graduates in Spanish go on to a wide variety of careers. Some pursue graduate study while others enter business or the cultural field. Many of our Spanish students register for a double major which is perhaps the ideal way to excel in a career in the humanities, education, journalism, government, or business as, beyond analytical skills, employers value the capacity to understand and engage with different cultures. With a population of nearly 70 million Latinos in the United States, bilingual employees capable of helping clients and customers in Spanish would be a tremendous asset in any field.

In addition to our course offerings, our Spanish students benefit from the presence on the second floor of Fahy hall, where our department is located and many of our courses are taught, of the Joseph A Unanue Latino Institute which organizes interesting cultural events and talks by Latino leaders from an array of fields.

Students are required to take an online placement test through the Global Learning Center in order to register for classes in any language(s) that they have previously studied.
